Tarsem, 2006, 117 min
A lush mix of day-to-day life in a 1915 Los Angeles hospital and a majestic fantasy world of bandits, tyrants, palaces and dreamscapes, Tarsem’s The Fall is, as indieWIRE described it, “a monumental undertaking.” The film, shot on location in 25 countries—and nearly as many years in the making—follows an immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) who’s in the hospital recovering from a fall. There she meets another patient (Lee Pace), who captivates her with a whimsical story that takes her far away from the hospital and into the most breathtaking corners of her imagination.
