The San Francisco Film Society’s Youth Education program announces the launch of a new Mentorship program for students ages 16–18 that is designed to support, encourage and nurture the career development of aspiring youth filmmakers. Selected students will be paired with a local independent filmmaker, who will provide ongoing mentorship in both filmmaking and career building over the course of several months.

Eligibility:

All applicants must:
• Be between the ages of 16 and 18
• Have demonstrated filmmaking experience
• Have a film project idea that they wish to complete through the course of the program
• Be nominated by SFFS, or by a teacher or film instructor who is familiar with their work

How to Apply:

Candidates must write an essay (500 words minimum) that includes:
• Their aspirations and career goals as a filmmaker
• What they hope to get from the program
• What they would like to learn from a professional mentor
• A brief treatment/synopsis of the film project they would like to produce in the program
Essays must be emailed (as attachments) to education@sffs.org with “MENTORSHIP APPLICATION: (Applicant Name)” in the subject field.

Student Goal:

With the support of their mentor, each participating student will aim to complete a short film that can be submitted to the Youth Works category of the San Francisco International Film Festival’s Golden Gate Awards.

Mentor Provides:

• 30 hours of in-person, one-on-one mentorship, which may include:
    - 1–2 hour regularly scheduled planning/strategy meetings
    - Visits to student’s film project shoots for on-set consultations
    - Opportunities for student to visit filmmaker’s production offices or sets
    - Accompaniment to appropriate local film events
• Career guidance
• Recommendations on filmmaking resources, services, equipment, crew, etc.
• Connections to the local film community
• Artistic and technical consultation
• Regular progress reports on the student’s film project
