Sam Burbank
In a cross between Repo Man and The Canterbury Tales, Sam Burbank’s new feature chronicles a band of misfits as they attempt to recover belongings placed in deep storage. Donovan Commons just lost his dot-com startup job and wants to access his stuff, the things he has stored with the company Stor4Yu. Although he can’t remember what that stuff is exactly, that’s not the point. It’s his stuff, and he has a right to it. But, Stor4Yu has closed and left its customers hanging, stuffless. As Donovan and his friend Imad learn more about the company, they realize they have to make a pilgrimage to Nevada in order have any chance of getting back Donovan’s crate. Along the journey they meet Audrey, a programmer/found-art artist; Cowboy, an African American long-haul trucker; Midge and Vivian, Red Hatters who won’t divulge what they have stored; and Carlo, a mysterious Italian who may or may not work in “private security.” An allegory of our decadent, materialistic and absurd relationship to business and junk, Where’s My Stuff? is mostly a comedy, slightly science fiction and a little bit critical. Its seeming vagueness about “things” simply mirrors the public’s understanding of the murky underworlds of shady business practices, dot-com bubbles and other worrisome affairs.
