Mimi Chakarova
Photojournalist Mimi Chakarova returns to her homeland of Bulgaria to discover that her village has become a ghost town following the collapse of Communisim. “The whole world has gone abroad,” her grandmother tells her. All too often, however, this journey is a disturbing descent into the world of sexual slavery. For several years, Chakarova traveled from impoverished rural areas in Eastern Europe to Turkey, Greece and Dubai to expose the lurid world of sex trafficking. Filmed undercover with unprecedented access to the trafficked women, traffickers and human rights activists, The Price of Sex investigates the root causes and criminal networks of the situation while compassionately documenting the stories of women enslaved by poverty and prostitution.
