Whether we watch them at an IMAX or on an iPod, we all have an opinion about which movies we like and which ones we hate. But what really makes a good film? And who decides what’s good and what’s not? How do the different elements of filmmaking—picture, sound, editing, lighting, special effects, direction—each play a part in a viewer’s experience? In this first class created for middle and high school-age students, filmmaker Richard Levien will take you on a back-stage tour of the filmmaking process. Focusing on his award-winning short film Immersion, Levien and several of his crew members will demonstrate and investigate how films are constructed, who creates them, and how audiences are affected by them. Students will learn how to be critical viewers and how to judge films for festival programs. Note: A select number of participants will be chosen as jurors for the Youth Works category at SFIFF53 in April 2010.
