In a small Bosnian village, residents are still suffering the aftershocks of the region’s civil wars. Goran (Rakan Rushaidat) is a drunk whose best friend Miro (Bojan Navojec) has lost his arms. A more industrious pal, Josip (Franko Dijak), suggests various business schemes, but it takes a tragedy for Goran to actually improve his life’s lot. With some inherited money and little hope, he buys a mobile cafeteria, fixes it up, and drives to different towns charging little or nothing for the food and drink he offers. Though he’s operating under a poor business model, Goran understandably encounters an enthusiastic range of clientele—including a beautiful woman named Maja (Natasa Janjic). And in the course of making the acquaintance of a wide array of his countrymen, he finds some tentative meaning for his existence and hope for the future. Following in the deeply humanistic cinema of filmmakers like Pjer Zalica and Goran Paskaljevic, director Antonio Nuic achieves a perfect balance of comedy and drama for his protagonist’s somewhat quixotic path and offers a way forward for a region blighted by strife and sorrow.
