A historic low-income neighborhood, once ravaged by gangs and drugs, is demolished, reemerging as a national model for progressive community building. Nicole, a 28-year-old single mother of six, is displaced by the revitalized neighborhood, which will include former and new residents, with homes for all income levels. Longing to return, yet determined to become self-sufficient, Nicole trains as a union carpenter and finally builds her new Habitat for Humanity home only a block from her former apartment. But even with many similar stories of success, this community is still haunted by stigma and is vulnerable to the return of crime. For New Columbia to succeed, neighbors will have to unite across economic, racia, and cultural divides and fight for the soul of their community.

What is really at stake in a system where corrections officers work overtime to take care of their children and inmates are separated from their children for up to 14 years for non-violent crimes they were set up to commit? Tearing women away from their families and leaving behind a legacy of shattered dreams—is this what federal mandatory minimum drug laws were designed for? By interweaving the stories of five women- one prison guard, one prisoner, one judge, one prosecuting attorney and one defense attorney, In Justice will tell the real life stories of mandatory minimums’ impact on family, justice and hope.
