Exploring the Sciences
Film. It’s not just for social studies class anymore! It has become a vital teaching resource for virtually any curriculum, including the sciences. In fact, it may be the ideal medium for engaging—and exciting—students who are normally indifferent or resistant to learning about science. As the quantity and quality of film content continually grows, filmmakers are branching out into subjects and specializations of all kinds and creating inspiring and enlightening—and, yes, even dramatic and fascinating—films rooted in subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, health, medicine, nutrition and the environment.
This series of films from around the world will provide teachers with important media resources and tools for the study of science disciplines at all grade levels. Interactive discussions will take place at each screening with special filmmaker guests, and study guides will be provided to teachers to help prepare students in advance and provide follow-up questions, activities and resources to help integrate each film’s content into the classroom.
All of our programs are designed to be interactive experiences rather than passive viewings, so students are expected to come prepared to ask questions of filmmakers and special guests and to participate in post-film discussions and Q&A.
New events will be posted here as they are scheduled, so check back regularly. Or sign up now to receive our email updates and be notified automatically. Just email kzwolfer@sffs.org and ask to be added to our teacher mailing list.
